A Must Read for Students of 2oth Century European History

Edward Norton was an American diplomat who retired to Malaga, Spain in the 1930s. One of the very few Westerners to stay and observe the entire seven months' rule by the Spanish Anarchists and Communists, his diaries document the disastrous results of government by mob.
After Norton's death, his great nephew, William Harmon, inherited the diaries, and has used them and other family documents to tell the story of the starvation, arson, mass executions and destruction which ended only when General Franco's forces reached the city to re-establish order.
I think this is an excellent account of an eye witness to the Spanish Civil War.
In my own youth, American news reports pictured Franco as the villain. He was indeed a dictator, but he appears to have saved Malaga from the final total destruction of the city and from the execution of its remaining citizens planned by the anarchists.

For example, a large fraction of objects scanned in industrial CT (for the purpose of nonde­ structive testing or reverse engineering) are made of a single material and so the ideal reconstruction should contain only two values: zero for air and the value associated with the material composing the object. Similar as­ sumptions may even be made for some specific medical applications; for example, in angiography ofthe heart chambers the value is either zero (in­ dicating the absence of dye) or the value associated with the dye in the chamber. Another example arises in the electron microscopy of biological macromolecules, where we may assume that the object to be reconstructed is composed of ice, protein, and RNA. One can also apply electron mi­ croscopy to determine the presenceor absence ofatoms in crystallinestruc­ tures, which is again a two-valued situation.

Each chapter in the book is by different authors and so the level of detail, notation, etc. is uneven. The chapters are more than just reprints of previous materials and are self-contained. The early foundation chapters are written from a mathematician's perspective, which is wholly unsatisfying for an engineer. There is a minor emphasis on binary images throughout the book, but binary images are not treated in any depth. In general, the algorithm and application chapters are more overview than details. Examples are almost nonexistent which means this would be an extremely poor textbook even for upper-level classes. The example in chapter 11 is full of errors and a bit incomplete. Overall, the chapters are much better than any one of the conference papers they are based on, but you will still need to consult the references to really use any of the information.

Excellent Introductory Book

I purchased this textbook for background use in a graduate level high temperature corrosion class. The book does pretty good job of explaining corrosion phenomena with lots of pictures and discrete steps. I found it very helpful for learning the basics of an unfamiliar topic. I learn by example, and I think this book could use more numerical examples with concrete equations.

I would recommend pairing it with David Young's "High Temperature Oxidation and Corrosion of Metals" for an awesome book combination to well learn about high temperature oxidation and corrosion reactions.

Excellent Introduction to the Philosophy of Religion

I teach Philosophy of Religion at Monroe County Community College (Monroe, Michigan). I received Stairs's and Bernard's text for review. I find it excellent in many ways. It's clearly written. It is sensitive to introductory students' abilities (it is very difficult material for students who have no philosophical background). For example, S & B's explanation of Plantinga's modal version of the Ontological Argument is, I think, as good as anything I've ever read. This book would be a great choice to complement the primary source material, almost all of which, in spite of its billiance, is unreadable to most students who would take Intro to Philosophy of Religion.

Very detailed and informative

Excellent book. It claims to be a college sophomore level, but regardless of that it is a great book (especially if you are designing your own class on the philosophy of religion)because it provides a lot of detail on various types of arguments, is informative and unbiased (at least from a religious perspective). It provides you with the necessary "amo" or tools to craft an argument that can challenge the status quo--if you think outside the box.

Despite the odd title - would anyone buy a non-thinker's Guide? - and annoying references to Buffy the Vampire Slayer (aimed at US college students) this is a good, balanced, comprehensive introduction.

The front cover says one minute workout, inside it refers you to the web site for "the one minute workout" It seems to me a book on healthy living. Just not what I expected.

Like a cook-book with no recipes

Don't buy this book. No exercise program in this book. Like a cook-book with no recipes. Nothing but an infomercial about products for sale on her website.Very disappointing. In the book she speaks of her 30 minutes of posture exercise every morning, then nothing. Don't buy this book.

Best posture book I have read

This book is amazingly simple, easy to understand, and a must if you truely want to succeed at restoring your posture. As a retired Chiropractor of 25 years that has struggled with poor posture all my life and tried all the gimics, books, and quick fixes on the market, I know how frustrating and difficult it can be to try to correct your posture.

This book is the best book I have ever read on posture correction and restoring your health.

I have found that there are no quick fixes to restoring your posture and achieving and maintaining good health. Dr. Paula explains this in a way that is not only informative and inspirational, but she also motivates you and shows you how to correct your posture. She has had years of additional training and education in posture correction beyond her Chiropractic education and has had first hand experience by correcting her own posture. But, more than a book on posture correction, this is a book about how to change your life, how to have more self confidance, and to find real happiness with yourself.

Dr. Paula shows you how to create a doable plan, and then she inspires and motivates you to insure your success. The results, if you follow her guidance and your plan, you will succeed, not only with correcting your posture, but also having better health, more self confidance, and real happiness.

this is an essential reference for somebody who once, long ago, took some courses in developmental psychology, and has subsequently forgotten most of it. now that grandchildren are going through developmental stages, it's great to have a very readable refresher course.

C'mon. Any collector/Batman Fan has to have this Graphic Novel in their collection.

This depicts the death of Jason Todd at the hands of the joker and Batman's emotional collapse afterwards. A lot of people really didn't like Jason Todd as Robin-which kinda blows my mind in a sense, yet I can understand how his attitude as 'Robin' puts people off. He jumps the gun and runs almost on pure emotion most of the time.

This graphic novel gives the reader a little bit of insight on Jason's attitude in my opinion. (Without spoiling anything.) We (the reader) have to remember that Jason is just a kid who's confused and just wants answers-which this graphic novel really sheds light on.

(Sorta spoiler in a sense.)

In my opinion, Jason's death was an unconditional sacrifice and this graphic novel helped me see that-which gave me more respect for the lad.

I feel like people see Robin less as an adolescent and more as Batman's...almost sort of crutch; They want him to have the same sense of justice as Batman, they want him to look up to Bruce as a mentor and they want his attitude to be optimistic.

Honestly, I enjoyed Jason Todd as a Robin and I enjoy his presence in the Dc Universe as a character even more. I felt his conflicting views with Batman really sheds light on the reader that Robin is just a kid who's been thrown into a confusing and dark world. Seeing Robin with a totally different attitude than his predecessor (Grayson is awesome, don't get me wrong.) is awesome for those reasons.

Overall without more rambling-this comic is awesome. I felt Tim Drake was a bit too pushy and too 'on the ball,' but I get it and I still enjoyed his introduction.

Keep in mind that this graphic novel is a bit older, so don't expect anything super flashy and overly dramatic like the newer Batman stuff. As far as story telling though, it's done incredibly well for its time.

I would definitely recommend this graphic novel.

A staple in Batman reading

Tragedy has always been the defining characteristic for Batman. His origins, his career as the Dark Knight, his most definable moments are often a tragic event in his life. This book contains perhaps one of the most important, and tragic events for Batman: the death of Robin. It is an excellent window into a rare comic book moment, when a protagonist truly dies (and then stays dead for quite some time). Right off the bat, you should purchase this book. It is too important of a moment in Batman's history to simply pass up.

So, with all that gushing, what are some of the failings of this work? As with Death of Superman, it suffers from comparison to certain elements of current comics. The dialogue, for example, is less mature and more wooden. What is important to remember about this comic, however, is that it was geared towards younger readers. Despite the current trend, comics have been primarily children's literature. It cannot be faulted too much for being a product of a different era.

The art is respectable, unlike certain late 80s and 90s art, but again looks less impressive when compared to some of today's talent. There is less detail, fewer colors, and a much more 'cartoonish' look. But Batman still captures the look of a brooding hero, and the talent is consistent throughout the entire collection.

As already stated, this book is worth the buy. It's interesting, gripping, and as every bit enjoyable as it is meant to be.

My Two Cents Worth

Like many others, I bought this book more for the secondary story, A Lonely Place of Dying. You see, I am a huge Robin fan with Dick and Tim being my most favorite characters of all time. However, if I were to rate both stories, I'd give the first story, A Death in the Family 3 stars and the second story, A Lonely Place of Dying 4 stars. Let me explain (and Spoiler Alert for the record).

Its well known that Jim Starlin had an immense hatred for the entire concept of Robin and had been lobbying for his death since he began his run on Batman. As a result, he intentionally wrote the character in an unappealing way. And you see that in A Death in the Family, there are many instances in just the first half of the story alone where all I could think about was the lost opportunities in doing some character development for Jason. But that and having him die isn't even the worst part of the story. The second half of A Death in the Family deals with the Joker becoming the Ambassador to Iran. It felt like I was reading an entirely different book. The concept isn't bad and sounds like an interesting plot for a Bronze Age type story but given that they just killed off Robin it was a weird gear change. I am also not a fan of the dialogue, it just felt really dated and sometimes Batman sounded like he was a hip-cat. The only good things I can say about this story is that its definitely a quick read and that if not for this watershed moment, I would never have gotten my favorite character Tim Drake and for all we know we never would have gotten the reuniting of the Bat-family during Knightfall a few years later.

As for the second story in this book, its much better. While the aim of the first story was to basically destroy the concept of Robin, Marv Wolfman is the exact polar opposite of Starlin. A Lonely Place of Dying seeks to repair the concept and while other writers such as Chuck Dixon will take it to an even higher level by making Robin a solo hero in his own right, Wolfman did a good job given what a debacle the whole Jason Todd thing had become. Honestly, my biggest criticisms of the story is that I felt it could have been a bit longer to really show how Batman needs Robin. I mean Tim meets Bruce in the last 25 pages and so it feels rather rushed. I also feel like the dialogue was a little too heavy, its definitely a longer read compared to the other story. Also the Joker angle kind of annoyed me a bit as well. But overall its a good story and I am glad that DC paired it with A Death in the Family, although I think Robin-The Joker's Wild would have also made a great story to go along with A Death in the Family as it sort of brings the entire Robin saga full circle when Tim Drake goes up against the Joker by himself (to date this story can only be bought in the out of print book, Robin: Tragedy and Triumph). Regardless, this book is worth getting at least for the second story.

About the Author

Maria Minniti is Professor of Economics and Professor of Entrepreneurship at Babson College. Her articles on entrepreneurship, economic growth, and complexity theory have appeared in such publications as the Journal of Economic Behavior and Organizations, the Journal of Business Venturing, Small Business Economics Journal, Comparative Economic Studies, and Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice. Also the author of book chapters and research monographs, she is the Research Driector of the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) project and an associate editor of the Small Business Economics Journal.

Andrew Zacharakis is the John H. Muller, Jr. Chair in Entrepreneurship at Babson College, where he previously served as Chair of the Entrepreneurship Department and Acting Director of the Arthur M. Blank Center for Entrepreneurship. Associate editor of the Journal of Small Business Management ― editor, with William Bygrave, of The Portable MBA in Entrepreneurship, and author of many articles, he actively consults with entrepreneurs and small business start-ups. He has been interviewed in newspapers nationwide, including The Boston Globe, The Wall Street Journal, and USA Today, and has appeared on the Bloomberg Small Busienss Report and been interviewed on National Public Radio. He teaches seminars to leading corporations, and has run executive workshops around the world. He is also coauthor, with Jeffrey Timmons and Stephen Spinelli Jr., of Business Plans That Work and How to Raise Capital.

Stephen Spinelli Jr. is Babson College's Vice Provost for Entrepreneurship. An Associate Professor, he holds the the Paul T. Babson Chair in Entrepreneurship and the Alan Lewis Chair in Global Management. A recognized leader in defining the field of entrepreneurship, prior to his academic career he cofounded Jiffy Lube International and subsequently founded and served as Chairman and CEO of American Oil Change Corporation. His research has appeared in such publications as the Journal of Business Venturing and Frontiers of Entrepreneurship. He has also been featured in The Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, The Boston Globe, Entrepreneur, and Inc. He has consulted for major corporations, and is coauthor of several books, including Franchising and New Venture Creation, and, with Jeffry Timmons and Andrew Zacharakis, Business Plans That Work and How to Raise Capital.

Mark P. Rice is the Murata Dean of the F.W. Olin School of Business and the Jeffry A. Timmons Professor of Entrepreneurial Studies at Babson College. His research on corporate innovation and entrepreneurship has been published widely in academic and practitioner journals, including Organization Science, R&D Management, Journal of Marketing Theory and Practice, IEEE Engineering Management Review, Academy of Management Executive, and California Management Review. Dean Rice has been a director and chairman of the National Business Incubation Association, which honored him in 1998 with its Founder's Award. He is coauthor of Radical Innovation, and, with Jana Matthews, Growing New Ventures, Creating New Jobs (Quorum, 1995).

Timothy G. Habbershon is Founding Director of the Institute for Family Enterprising at Babson College, where he holds the President's Term Chair in Family Enterprising. Additionally, he is a founding partner in the TELOS Group, providing transition and strategy consultations to large family firms worldwide. Previously, he was the founding director of family business programs in the Snider Entrepreneurship Center at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, and in the Freeman Institute for Rural Entrepreneurship in the School of Business, University of South Dakota. His research on family business has appeared in such journals as Family Business Review, the Journal of Business Venturing, and Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice. He also has a regular column―Family, Inc.―in BusinessWeek's Small Biz magazine, and teaches regularly in executive education programs and presents at conferences in the U.S. and internationally.

what a GEM

I'm actually using this book right now for one of my classes. Normally I don't read my text books, i just kinda reference them. But this book is just gold. The case studies are the best. We get to see first hand what entrepreneurs go though and all the challenges that may come up. It's a great reality check. I'm not finished with it yet, but at this rate, I WANT to finish it, even though it's not required for class.

If you're new to entrepreneurship, but you know you HAVE to control your own financial destiny. This book is a must.

Good read. Contains a lot of useful information for anyone who is thinking about becoming an entrepreneur. Contains cases of various companies, some well-known, and explains the initiative the companies took in order to be very successful.
