Not illustrated. 1919 Excerpt: ...on the numbers of the hymns. Lady Clifden used also to hurry from Mass with any numbers she had caught up, and she considered Sunday her lucky day. Suddenly her luck changed. She told me that on the previous Sunday she had just pulled off a nice little coup, and was about to grasp it, when, to her horror she saw a skeleton hand stretched forth. Before she could collect her scattered senses the skeleton hand had raked in her gold. Where that gold had gone to worried and puzzled her dreadfully. So it did me! I never heard the last of it. She could not get over her loss. It was no use suggesting that the hand had belonged to one of the emaciated harpies who prey upon the unwary. Lady Qifden knew all about them, and was a match for the whole gang, had they attacked her. She insisted that the hand that had grasped her gold had neither skin nor flesh upon it, and that she had seen the two bare arm bones from wrist to elbow. We compromised on the suggestion of a third party that it must have been the devil himself, and that the heat he is supposed to engender had melted the gold entirely away. Monte Carlo is a very interesting place for the clairvoyant to be in, more especially if her vision extends to seeing auras. Perhaps nowhere on earth are the basest human passions more swiftly and violendy aroused, and several times, when some tragedy was being enacted, or some enormous coup was being brought off, I have been unable to see details, because they were hidden within a dense envelop of dark crimson clouds. In the rooms a crowd collects swiftly, and from a hundred human auras, all gathered in one compact mass, stream forth emanations of the basest description. Cupidity, envy, revenge, lust of the vilest, despair, ruin, death. I remember being met one night by a f...

About the Author
Scottish author Violet Tweedale was a socialite in the England of the XIX century, as well as a champion of social causes and Helena Blavatsky's best friend. She wrote on many subjects, but as a theosophist and a Christian, she developed a dichotomy in her philosophy, combining psychic studies with her religious beliefs.

An Upper Crust Victorian Era Aristocrat and Dedicated Ghost Hunter
By Ken Korczak
Ghost hunting clubs and paranormal investigation has become a mega-popular trend in the past decade. Local folks everywhere are starting up clubs and teams, dedicated to seeking out proof that the dead still live on another plane.

The first order of business for these types is printing up some cool t-shirts with neato logo. Then some cool hats with logo. Oh, and you have to have a web site and a Facebook fan page. Also required is the latest electronic gear: full-spectrum cameras, shadow detection devices, gizmos that show changes in local magnetic fields, detectors that can ferret out anomalous cold spots, subhuman-frequency audio recorders...

Yes, what is old is new again. Today's paranormal investigation teams would do well to read Violet Tweedale's, GHOSTS I HAVE SEEN.

Tweedale is the late 19th Century and early 20th Century version of the modern ghost hunter. She didn't have access to all the slick electronic toys - when she started she didn't even have electricity! Tweedale and her fellows relied on mediums and the "psychic attunement" of their minds and belief systems.

Published in 1920, Ghosts I Have Seen makes claims of paranormal sightings that none of today's ghost enthusiasts can come close to matching, even with the arsenal of high-tech tools at their disposal.

Tweedale tells of dozens of confrontation with bona fide ghosts encountered in the flesh - and I mean in the flesh. She related a plethora of stories of seeing dead people that look every bit as real and solid as any living person. But that's only for starters. Tweedale also reports on her (or other's) encounters with:

* Elementals

* Familiars

* Haunted houses

* Possessed mediums

* Evil spirits

* Mythical creatures, such as satyrs

* Demonic presences

... And much more.

Tweedale was a British aristocrat of the top order. She traveled among the supreme upper crust of British royalty - her book is replete with references to lords and ladies, baron, baronesses, counts and countesses.

She was first and foremost a Scott. Her father was Robert Chambers, the publisher of Chamber's Journal, a powerhouse publisher based in Edinburgh. This in turn allowed her to consort with some of the most illustrious literati of all time, including the likes of poet Robert Browning and artists Frederic Leighton and John Mallais. She was also an associate of the famous Madam Blavatsky, founder of Theosophy.

The question is: How believable are her stories? They're sensational, certainly. Was Tweedale a bored pseudo-intellectual society heiress showing off her useless education to fill the endless days of tedium among the wealthy elite - the teas, the gala balls, the society functions, attending to the affairs of her enormous castle-like dwellings? Or did her wealth allow her the freedom to probe deeper into the world of mysticism and esoteric in a way that was meaningful and legitimate?

It may be a bit of both. My impression in reading Ghosts I Have Seen is that Tweedale indeed was witness to some pretty bizarre phenomenon. After all, her normal stomping grounds were the ancient, stony, monstrous castles of northern Scotland.

Imagine how picturesque! Centuries old drafty, dreary structures with real dungeons where thousands of poor souls were tortured or murdered in dark holes - locations where the political machinations of the Scottish clans played out their blood revenges and plots against their fellow royal elites, Scot, Celt and Saxon alike.

It must be said that Tweedale, despite her wealth and position, was by all accounts a hard-working novelist and writer. She produced more than 30 books. She was also a political activist, philanthropist and frequently got her hands dirty by working in the trenches with the lowest scum of society.

In one segment, she mentions sitting with a prostitute while the woman was slowly dying in a poor house bed - a depressing facility where Tweedale worked as a volunteer to aid those on the bottom rung.

It would seem that VIOLET TWEEDALE was a woman of intelligence and character. Because of this, I am willing to grant her some leeway and accept some of her personal tales of ghost encounters with some credibility.

All in all, this is an interesting enough read. It often rambles and is unfocused, and should have had at least 50 pages edited away. There are pointless digressions. It's interesting to observe how ghost hunting today and ghost hunting 100 years ago is more or less the same - if anything, today's high-tech paranormal investigators seem behind the curve vis-a-vis the likes of Violate Tweedale.

Requires patience but worth reading, and you can't beat the price
By Diana W.
It's a little hard to be too critical of a freebie. The writing in this one was uneven, but, I suppose, true to the literary conventions of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. I suspect Ms. Tweedale was a terrible snob. She was born into wealth and privilege and wants you to know it as she relentlessly drops names of the social leaders she counted as dear friends and makes sure her reader knows she was acquainted with members of the British royal family. Given that she never had to worry about money, she was free to become an intellectual and turn her intellect to matters of the spiritual realm. The book, of course, was written at a time when Spiritualism was in vogue. If one can wade through the social register and hopscotch past the now-obscure literary references, when she settles down to write about her supernatural experiences, they're quite straightforward and interesting to read. She touches on astral projections, reincarnation, sightings of apparitions, etc. Interspersed with this radical thinking-for-the-time are almost paradoxically conventional religious views.
