About the Author
John S. March, MD, is Chief of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Duke University Medical Center. A widely published author of books for professionals, including OCD in Children and Adolescents, his research defines the state of the art for treatment of young people with OCD and other anxiety and mood disorders. In addition to his clinical work, Dr. March is active in the teaching and training of mental health professionals. Recently, he served as one of the principal investigators of a National Institute of Mental Health-funded project that compared ways to help kids and teens beat OCD. He lives in Durham, North Carolina.

Christine M. Benton is a Chicago-based writer and editor.

This was an excellent resource, although the reading level is geared towards older teens and adults. Young teens will definitely need guidance while reading it.

Here is what I liked about it:

1. It very practically and accurately explained what it was like to live with OCD. The explanations and examples will help readers understand the condition.
2. OCD is portrayed in a manner that does NOT make you feel as though you are strange or weird.
3. The book explained how there are times when stressors can exacerbate OCD, and times when it is easier to deal with it. It also shows how to identify what is OCD and what isn't.
4. If you have ever felt as though you are controlled by OCD, this book shows you how to take back the power it has had over your life. Obviously OCD doesn't go away, but there are many practical solutions offered that help you develop coping skills.

Easy to read/appealing to young people

This book was recommended to me by my son's therapist. It is an accessible approach to dealing with OCD using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.. My son and I are only on step 1 right now, so I can't speak to the program's ultimate efficacy for us, but my son liked the sound of the program and feels hopeful that it can help him manage or eliminate OCD. I do wish the book came with some companion online resources, like the OCD maps and charts featured in the book. My son, who is 10, particularly liked the case studies and testimonials by other kids. I think they helped him feel more normal. I was initially taken aback by the recommended personification of OCD, and I am still not crazy about the suggestion to give it a nickname. The point is to externalize it, and this does seem effective for my son.

Fantastic for use in therapy

I'm a therapist, and purchased this to use with a teenage client struggling with OCD. It's helpful to use this in conjunction with March's "OCD in Children and Adolescents: A Cognitive-Behavioral Treatment Manual," which is geared towad professionals and presents a framework for treatment. "Talking Back to OCD" indicates that it can be used outside of the therapeutic context; however, I found it helpful to use in treatment. The book's format covers education about OCD, how to externalize OCD (seeing OCD, not the child, as the problem) and then step by step ways to strengthen coping skills and prepare the child for exposure and response prevention tasks. Teenage clients like the concept of "talking back" to OCD and identifying the ways in which OCD has tried to "trick" them. The approach of this book allows parents and children (along with therapists) to "team up" against OCD. I've seen this process of externalizing the problem bring much relief to clients who have personalized their OCD symptoms and believe there is something "wrong" with them. The chapters for parents are helpful in bringing caregivers onto the treatment team; I discovered that teens also benefit from reading the parent chapters.

The tools in the book help clients to become more aware of their own thought processes when compulsive behavior kicks in, so that they can begin to modify and challenge "OCD thoughts." The use of homework assignments is empowering for clients. My one complaint with the book is that I would have liked to see much more information on coping with obsessions-- repetitive bad thoughts. There was terrific, detailed information on reducing compulsive behavior such as hand washing, but I found myself wanting more on how to address the obsessive bad thoughts that often accompany OCD. I would highly recommend this book for families wanting to know more about helping their child with OCD, as well as for therapists seeking new tools to use with young clients.

Mark Stagi

Mark Stagi has been passionate about photography since catching the photo bug as a child Markgot fully hooked in the darkroom while in high school when watching the magic of a print appear. In college, Mark continued his studies of Photography and Fine Art with a degree in the Arts and an emphasis on Photography. Right after college, Mark started his own wedding photography business focusing on Fine Art Wedding photography. Mark's wedding business all started with his passion to create fresh and fun wedding images that reflect each bride's unique day.

Growing up in the Silicon Valley, Mark has always had as much of a passion for technology as he has with the arts. As the photo industry started to move over into the digital world, Mark has been at the forefront of mastering the digital tools that photographers need to create art.

Mark's passion for photography has also led him to lead photography workshops and run a photography website http://www.digitalphotobuzz.com, where he shares his passion and love for photography with Shooting Tips, Online Tutorials, and other photography news and info.

Not better than Pixelmator's built in Help

I was given a free copy of this book by the publisher.

Overall, "Learning Pixelmator" is pretty clumsily written, with lots of awkward phrases and as a result reads like a first draft. For example "There are almost 30 different blending modes." Almost 30, eh? Why not just state that there are 27 blending modes? It's often wordy and redundant: "The key is resampling, which basically means that the program is going to add new pixels to the image by guessing, based on the surrounding colors. Since the program is basically guessing (although it is a very smart guess) on what types of pixels to add, you get a loss of sharpness, so as a general guideline it's not recommended to go up in size too much." This is how the whole thing reads--it's not so much inaccurate as it is distracting from the actual content. At times it's downright confusing. Here's a description of blending modes: "The options in the Comparative and Hue section will invert the color of interacting pixels and give some pretty crazy effects. Finally, the Comparative and Hue, Saturation and Lightness modes apply specific color changes." Ok, aside from the fact that Pixelmator *doesn't* actually group blending modes into named sections like "Comparative and Hue", you're left wondering here what those "crazy effects" or "specific color changes" really are. And why is "Comparative and Hue get mentioned twice here? (Pixelmator's built-in Help boils each blending mode down to a single, clear sentence like: "Hue: Paints with a tinted effect, where tinting is darkest in areas of high saturation.") Important stuff is covered too briefly: the section on Levels and Curves--among the most useful and subtle tools for color correcting images--is glossed over in just six paragraphs.

This is one of those technical books that seems to think that learning software is mostly about making sure you click on a whole lot of menus and dialog boxes. Pixelmator's standard Help content is actually really good and to the point--if you need to quickly learn how a feature works it's a better source than this book. It's odd that "Learning Pixelmator" really doesn't do more than reiterate a lot of that Help content. It seems like a missed opportunity to teach color correcting photos or other useful image manipulation techniques using the application. There are one or two sections that are sort of useful: skin retouching techniques and adjustments specific to black and white photos, but you could find dozens of tutorials online covering the same and more. Annoyingly, there are no listings of the many online resources including Pixelmator's own support forums and tutorial site, which seems like a big oversight.

Never expected such poor quality

Although the cover is in color, the entire book is printed in black and white. The black and white pictures are not clear and very difficult to see buttons etc clearly. I expected a book teaching a photo editing program to have color pictures and the printing itself to be better. Hate this product

A step through the Pixelmator menu with little instruction on how to use them

First the Bad and the primary reasons for the two stars :

The book is basically an incremental "step through" each item in the Pixelmator menu. Very little "how tos", "tricks" or instruction on how to use these tools to modify images. I agree with other reviewers comments that just studying the free Pixelmator documentation is probably just as good as this book.

I was especially disappointed in the sections on the use of Masks, one of the most important tools of modern digital image modification software.

The book has a very expensive colorful slick cover BUT the book's entire content is in Grey Scale ! This makes explanation of the color adjustment and manipulation tools less than ideal. Its just hard to visual color management in grey scale...at least for me.

Due to the above (and other shortcomings) I believe the book is way overpriced! There are excellent downloadable Pixelator video tutorials available for Macs (from Amazon) that are much much better and at a tiny fraction of the cost of this book. The great thing about these videos is that you can actually see the tools being used and some tricks on how to use them effectively.

The Good

This book is handy, if you have the patience, to step through each item in the Pixelmator menu. It forces one to at least be exposed to the various tools, even if their functions and idiosyncrasies are not throughly explained.

I also thought the brief intro to various basic concepts of digital images (pixels vs dots per inch, etc) was very good.

Teach yourself yoga!

I'm on day 15. I have been dutifully doing the exercises daily without missing a day as proscribed. When I first leafed through the book I saw a photo of the lady in a headstand. I thought, really? Will that happen in 28 days? I don't know yet. So far In the first 15 days we just do headstand prep. That's the beauty of the system. Each day builds, and every four days is review. This is a really great book to either teach your self yoga or use in conjunction with yoga lessons. You don't even need a mat or a block or any props (so far) to do this yoga.

Each day ends with a page long thought or idea to consider about yoga. The beginning of the book said plan for about 20 minutes a day for your yoga. I must breathe slower than most because it takes me about 30 -40 minutes a day (not counting meditation) to do each session. A minute of meditation is suggested before beginning. I've gradually been lengthening my meditation 'cause it's fun.

Some of the alignments may seem mysterious to modern yoga enthusiasts. I decided to do the poses as depicted in the book even if what we do in the studio now is slightly different. For example, cobra pose in this book has the elbows way out to the sides. Follow the directions because they are linked to subsequent poses.

The breath exercises are the best. I feel they are covered in greater detail than the newer yoga books i have read.

A classic for decades, still the best beginner/intermediate yoga book around. I am discovering it all over again after straining my back.

Most comprehensive on science of Paleo but not enough on ...

After years of doing all variety of "diets" or eating lifestyles, from raw vegan to vegan to vegetarian to omnivore with calorie counting to eating-at-home-only to regular juice fasting for quick weight loss, I was so ready for a major change.

I grew up on a Persian diet so lots of meats and vegetables and rice and moderate amounts of bread, cheese, but also a ton of fruits and salads and the usual sweets all cultures adore. So deep inside, I always craved the meats when I was on vegan or vegetarian diets.

I knew that meat wasn't "the problem". I also knew that certain breads and pastas and noodles and foods in general would give me this heavy feeling after eating, and I wanted to get rid of that once and for all. So when a friend talked about her Paleo diet at length, I jumped onboard without hesitation. My husband and I went Paleo late January and we're in week 8 or 9 as I write this review. This was one of the books she recommended and I love the author and follow her on social media. Here's my review of this book.

4-stars. It is the most comprehensive book on Paleo, giving you every reason and logic behind why eating this way is to your ultimate health and longevity. I felt that she spent a long time - about 125 pages - giving you all the health issues you could develop if you eat gluten and processed sugar and how your body reacts to all of that crap and I read them. She lost me when she was talking about all the biology and anatomy but I followed along and appreciated it.

Then between 125-225 are her meal plans but they won't apply to everyone. She addresses major conditions such as high cholesterol, or diabetics or fibromalagia or other conditions before getting to "Squeaky Clean Paleo" which would apply to you if you don't fall under those conditions (I didn't so this section applied). I'm honestly not sure if I'll follow 30-day plans, which naturally refer to a lot of her recipes. And then finally Part 3 - the recipes section starts on page 225 but first a few lessons on chopping and slicing and cooking essential.

The book is about 400 pages, and my favorite recipe so far is the blueberry cobbler (see picture) but these recipes do look slightly complex. She's also huge into bone broth and sauerkraut which I'll have to see if I make - she has recipes. I love her no-nonsense approach with reasoning and science behind it so if you love nutrition and science, you'll LOVE this book. I am giving it a 4 star even though I highly recommend the book because I wish there were less sections on all the human ailment conditions and MORE on just Paleo - how to eat Paleo, how to make quick easy Paleo foods. I hope this helps and happy Paleo eating!

Not my favorite, but a good solid addition to the paleo cookbook collection

Overall, a good solid addition to our paleo cooking bookshelf. The first quarter of the book is focused on paleo education, the second quarter on various meal plans for different ailments, and the last half is dedicated to recipes. Some parts of the book are a bit of overkill. For example, there is a six-page long description of how to chop veggies! What I really like about the recipes is that there are a lot of photos, the recipes are overall pretty simple and don't require a lot of exotic ingredients. We have several favorites from this book, one that even the kids enjoy eating. While not my favorite paleo cookbook, it has earned a nice solid position on my paleo cookbook shelf.

Paleo diet meets functional medicine!

I love this book!

For anyone new to the Paleo approach to health and eating, Ms. SanFilippo's Practical Paleo is a perfect starting place. While the market has seen an explosion of books in the Paleo diet world over the last decade, this book is unique in that is combines the wisdom of the Paleo approach to nutrition with the unique insights that are emerging from the "functional medicine" approach to health.

She provides, for instance, 30-day meal plans that are tailored to specific health conditions, such as thyroid health and athletic performance. There's an especially delightful and informative discussion about gastrointestinal health (including a Poop Pageant in which she describes how stool character can be used to discern digestive problems that left me laughing until it hurt!). The book is packed with beautiful illustrations that make the discussions crystal-clear.

There are also a substantial collection of recipes, most of them unique that I have not seen before, consistent with the Paleo approach. Even readers who have read other Paleo cookbooks will discover many new twists on meals and snacks in this book.

All in all, Practical Paleo is a masterful piece of work.

The high price to taxpayers of spurious investment in for-profit schools should be no surprise

There is a strong tendency for reviewers to focus on the book they think the author should have written instead of how well w/he did at writing what s/he set out to do. There are a large number of aspects of what Winthrop University professor A. J. Angulo (who holds two graduate degrees from Harvard) terms “for-profit colleges and universities (FPCUs) in his succinct history Diploma Mill$.

The book Angulo actually did write is a long-time-frame account of FPCUs in the United States based mostly on published sources of data. This he does very well, recalling (at least to me, since I have read literature on the emergence of professionalization of law and medicine) the absence of professional training before the Civil War and the gradual growth of professional standards and professional education in the “progressive era” (1890-1916). Just how untrained physicians through most of the 19th century were is scary.

Universities were reluctant to add business schools (though one would hardly guess that from the focus on MBAs now!) and for-profit business programs taught good penmanship as well as accounting.

Though FPCUs existed through the 19th century, the real boom fed on the federal money aimed to educate WWII veterans. The enabling legislation (Servicemen’s Readjustment Act of 1944) specifically forbade any attempt to impose national standards and most states showed no interest in establishing the efficacy (in terms of skills or employment related to “training” and “education” funded by the GI Bill). The number of FPCUs jumped from less than 2000 in 1944 to more than 7000 by 1949. A 1950 VA study of allegations of fraud found that 78% were made against for-profit institutions, many of which took the money and ran (aka “fly by night” businesses that disappeared, plus those going into bankruptcies).

That boom (with concomitant education bust) paled before the gold rush by FPCUs following the Higher Education Act of 1965. Those setting up Educational Opportunity grants should have looked at how so much money was diverted from education to marketing and other kinds of administration maximizing profits in the case of the GI bill(s). Actually, no knowledge of this history is necessary to guess that if the federal government insured student loans, institutions would recruit “students” wanting degrees rather than any education and that the profits from guaranteed loans would guarantee recruitment of those who would drop out and default on loans, especially with little or no education actually available to them.

Similarly, anyone with much familiarity with American politics would know that there would be resistance to any objective evaluations (of FPCUs, or of anything else), that there would be concerted efforts to fund Christianist institutions (“Bible colleges”) with tax dollars under the guise of “religious freedom,” and that massive lobbying campaigns would water down any attempts at regulation. The appointment of industry insiders with an aversion to regulating the institutions they had been employed by or would be employed by after leaving office is especially flagrant in the case of the federal education officials appointed by George W. Bush and California ones appointed by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, but the examples of US Senators caving in return for fairly negligible favors (not just campaign contributions) from FPCU lobbyists Angulo mentions are very liberal Democrats, Ted Kennedy and Tom Harkins. (After demanding evidence from Reagan’s Secretary of Education William Bennett against one of Kennedy’s contributors, Kennedy publicly accepted that allegations were true.)

If not amazing, it is appalling that FCPUs managed to dilute the requirement that 15% of FCPU income for institutions certified for guaranteed stundent loans not come from the federal government’s guaranteed loans to 10%. I think that it should be 50+%.

Having tried to stay within the bounds of the book Angulo wrote, I will extend beyond his inquiry to point out (as he occasionally alludes to) that some of the problems of rapidly rising administrative costs and executive salaries (as more and more of the teaching is done by adjuncts who are paid little more than Walmart greeters), grade inflation and general debasement of standards afflict public and private (nonprofit) colleges and universities, too, but the quantitative differences between them and NCPUs are very staggering. Take the $42 million 2009 compensation for Robert Silberman, CEO of for-profit Strayer Education (in contrast to $800,000 for the president of Harvard). And the ratio of spending on marketing to that on providing education is similarly off-the-chart for FPCUs in comparison to nonprofit educational institutions.

The Title is Only the Beginning of its Problems

This book is a fraud, a misdirection. Even if I accept everything the author presented at face value, there are still several problems with the book. In this review I present concerns about the title, the approach, the balance of the account, and the conclusions.

The title, "Diploma Mills," is inflammatory, particularly in how it is applied. This term normally refers to operations that purport to award university degrees from institutions that sound real, but are not recognized as degree-granting. Often no academic work is actually required, just payment of a fee. The diploma (and other faux documents, like transcripts) serves to bolster the holder's false claims of having graduated with the degree indicated. This is NOT what the book is about. Instead, it is an indictment of for-profit higher education. The author considers for-profit schools to be frauds, but starts out his book by perpetrating a fraud in the use of that title.

I also object to the author's approach to the subject. Clearly, he has a conclusion in mind from the beginning and then presented his case like a prosecutor. This theory-to-evidence approach (deduction) is fine, if you lay the groundwork for why the theory is in place to begin with. Instead, the author just assumes the basic premise, and then sets out to bludgeon the reader with examples supporting it. I wonder, however, what the other case is? Given that for-profit schools have existed for just about as long as traditional universities have in this country, what could possibly be driving that? The author never presents that side of things, merely attributing the operation of these schools to greed and evil. But if he'd taken an inductive (evidence-to-theory) approach, and allowed the complete story to emerge, what might the conclusions have been? Or, given his predisposition, what conclusions might the reader be allowed to form? We can't know from this presentation.

Then there's balance. At least three-quarters of the book is spent on the past history of these schools. While interesting, it's not exactly supportive of the conclusions drawn. Until the rise and pre-eminence of accreditation during the late 19th and through the first half of the 20th centuries, schools training people in trades (including law, medicine, and business, as the author shows us) operated without serious oversight and with full separation from the classical curricula offered by degree granting colleges and universities (which these schools were not). As the universities took over the teaching of these subjects, for-profits were shoved to the side, left with other, non-academic trades to teach. It wasn't until the 1970s (and the University of Phoenix) that we saw the for-profits make a strong move into the academic arena. BUT THIS WAS A DIFFERENT PHENOMENON! It wasn't like someone running a barber college decided to morph it into a university. Instead, universities popped up designed to (a) award recognized (by accreditors) degrees and (b) enrich the investors in the university. This had almost nothing to do with trade schools ripping off the GI BIll or the Pell Grant program. Yet the author makes this leap without explanation, as if we're all supposed to just go along. But this concept--for-profit universities awarding degrees--is his real complaint. In fact, trade schools--many of which also accredited by recognized agencies--have operated continuously to present-day. But the author abandons this subject--again, most of the book--as soon as he gets to his real thesis. But I guess he wouldn't have a book, just an article that no one would read.

Finally, his conclusions. Let's stipulate that there has been abuse by even modern-day for-profit schools. (Especially compelling are the low graduation rates and the high default rates on student loans.) Where are the abuses from traditional universities to be discussed? That bunch has been operating as an oligarchy for decades. The vast--VAST!--majority of the current student loan crises stems from students attending traditional, not-for-profit universities (both public and private). Tuition prices far outstrip the pace of inflation, and great questions as to the utility of these degrees in the marketplace are being raised. But the author completely glides past this much larger blight on the American higher education scene. Amazing.

Also, the author ignores the fact that all of the financial aid abuse (his main pet peeve) occurs at schools accredited by agencies recognized by the Department of Education for the purposes of rendering these schools eligible to participate in Federal financial aid. Where is his discussion of THAT? It's not there. And what about the fact that there are several agencies recognized to accredit degree-granting institutions? Three of these, beyond the regional associations, accredit primarily for-profit universities. Two of them, however, seem to do better at it than even the regional associations, with the third being a real problem. Does the author make these distinctions? No.

What about the relative value of degrees awarded by schools accredited by these associations? The author fails to examine this, despite the fact that the real explosion of for-profit schools has occurred in this sector. My own doctoral research and others have indicated there are real differences here-differences that can affect the value of the education received (through the utility of the degrees awarded). But again, the author fails to distinguish among these.

Finally, what about the for-profit schools that are regionally accredited? Sure, the University of Phoenix has come under considerable scrutiny for its recruiting practices, lower graduation rates, and higher loan default rates. But what about its curricula? Do students earn a real degree there? The author seems to dismiss that possibility through the use of the title "Diploma Mills," but never actually explores this question. And what about the number of for-profit universities that are accredited and operating without these problems? Hardly any mention of pioneers like Walden, American Military, and the University of Sarasota (now Argosy University), all of whom seemed to have settled into the accredited higher education sector quite nicely. Oh, and while I'm at it, what about schools specifically set up to address the needs of nontraditional students, but are not-for-profit? How does the not-for-profit National University differ from, say, Strayer University? We'll never know by reading this book.

There is a huge difference between having a bunch of observations and forming them into a carefully crafted thesis. The author fails to make this leap successfully. If you're willing to ignore the authors predispositions, leaps in logic, and conclusions, there are a lot of interesting facts to be had in between. But that's not what we paid for, is it?

Lots of data, not enough testimony

I certainly agree with Angulo's concluding remarks. The "market funded" or "private sector" (as the for-profits try to rebrand themselves lately) sector of higher education does not differ from traditional public or private institutions merely by its shareholders and CEOs. It differs fundamentally, for the imperative to make money diminishes all the other components of the college or university mission.

Academic freedom, the necessity to support quality faculty, the investment in salaries for qualified staff, and the nature of caring for students beyond delivering a bare-bones education during their enrollment are all lacking compared to standard campuses. Angulo accumulates the statistics that prove early on, business schools in the 19th century were gouging their students, and already, the emphasis lay in luring easy targets into the system. Paying up front, as well, guaranteed a steady income for the owners, even if then as now many students soon failed.

While Angulo provides a survey of this system, and how it has worsened as online schools enter, and as campuses are thbought up by profiteers to reinvent themselves as market-driven entities, he does not give enough of the personal stories that could have enriched his dry research. Why not interview faculty or admissions staff at these places? Talk to students, such as single moms or veterans, laid-off workers or those fresh out of an inner-city high school, about why they chose such a degree program over a community or state college. The facts are gathered, but not these voices of the more than 10% of enrolled college students in these institutions, who also get almost half of student financial aid (mostly loans) and who (the GI Bill offers a loophole to the 10% federal restriction requirement on non-government financial aid coming in for students, curiously) default at discouraging levels. Angulo feels that for-profits should compete on the market free of federal aid, but his case might have been bolstered if his data had been supplemented by testimony not from Congress or lobbyists alone, but from the cohorts working and enrolling here.
