Excellent Reference Resource
By Stockade
The other reviews have it right, this volume is excellent. It provides details on the history of the uniforms worn by West Point Cadets from 1802 through 1955, when the book was published. Many B&W photos and colored illustrations are included. Highly recommended if you have an historical interest in U.S. military uniforms.

The best book on the USMA at West Point, N.Y.!
By Herbert Booker
GREETINGS & SALUTATIONS! No other book on the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York comes close to this gem of a book. Many other books on the same subject neglect showing even a cadet rank chart and those few that do do not always include half-tone photographs or pictures in colour, this one has colour and B&W pictures and depicts the evoltion of the Cadet Grey uniform from the first use to the year this book was last published. The price is reasonable from Amazon.com and you can still acquire copies of this out-of-print book, believe it or not! You might even find one with a dust jacket too!

Fascinating lens through which to view USMA history
By Andrew S. Rogers
Countless books have been produced about the United States Military Academy at West Point and its history, with a special glut coming within the last few years as the USMA observed its bicentennial. But few, I'd bet, traced the school's history through the particular prism of the uniforms worn by the cadets. Although this title is nearly a half-century old, many of the uniforms of 1955 are being worn today with little or no modification. And that makes this book not only an interesting history, but also a reasonably useful guide for today.
Although this book seems to have been written, perhaps, for a younger audience, it's still a worthwhile resource for any reader. The many photographs and drawings are well-explained, and helpful appendices at the back include sketches of the various chevrons worn by cadet NCOs and officers. The text contains a fair summary of cadet life on post, and how the various uniforms fit into the myriad activities carried on at the USMA and by cadets in the field.
The most obvious change between 1955 and today is the arrival of female cadets, which of course produced a whole new raft of uniforms, or uniform variants, that could be included in an updated study. But for the period from 1802 until when it was published, this book is a rewarding look at what cadets wore, and what sorts of things they did while they were wearing it.

outstanding book
By Alan Winters
This is not a book for beginners, so I need a lot of help with it. Hebrew words are based on three-letter roots and then modified for grammar and syntax. It is supposed to be easy, but not for me. This book really gives insight into word development. I recommend it to anyone who is seriious in their learning.

Needful for study for sure!!
By ensign4Him
The BEST tool for learning Biblical Hebrew more in depth. This is the one book I would not give up when reading the bible in Hebrew. It's very easy to use, concise and to the point. Wherever my bible goes, this goes also! It's all about the "root words" and how many meanings they can have. I also have "The Analytical Hebrew and Chaldee Lexicon" which is great if you want to look up a word directly from the Hebrew Tanakh, with every word letter by letter, every verb conjugation, etc. But it's also "harder on the eyes". If you're seriously studying, you need both. But this Etymological Dictionary is by far the most needful, especially when getting started. Once you begin delving into Hebrew, you can never have enough dictionaries. Praise the Lord, there are now so many tools out there. But Rabbi Hirsch's is definitely a "must have".

A MUST for everyone's library Judaica
By Faber F. Mcmullen
This is a must book for any serious student of the Bible in Hebrew. I use it more than any other book when I am preparing a sermon or teaching from the Jewish scriptures.

Change My Option of the Dummies Series
By The Limey Tech
Being an IT professional it is hard to find a good computer book for studing. They are either a rewrite of the technical manual with some extra pictures added or in the case of the Dummies series, the level is so low as to be patronising.

Although it's sometimes hard to blame the "Dummies" series for this as it is all down to the Author and Editor who submit the material.

This book was supplied as part of a training course held by the author (well it would be!) and it really opened my eyes. At first I was "You cannot be serious" than after a few pages I realised this guy really knows his stuff.

The level was perfect (it is a beginners guide after all), it covered all the major topics in a clear and concise manner and he reference some additional reading that you need to be aware of in order to sit the exam.

The material was up to date and the practical exercises covered everything you need to setup and install a SO/HO Cisco network. They are good practice for the exam simulations too.

Overall, I'll give the Dummies series another go and would certainly have no hesitation in purchasing any other books written by Glen E. Clarke.

Great Book for the CCENT Exam

No longer maps to the current CCENT Exam 100-101 ICDN1
By Nathaniel Baldwin
While the information in this book is not technically wrong it is becoming out of date. The 640-822 exam that this maps to is no longer offered and the new 100-101 ICND1 CCENT actually requires more advanced knowledge that this edition of the book will tell you isn't on the exam. Some of the commands listed are also in the process of being phased out of the latest versions of Cisco IOS. While still valid some commands will return an IOS prompt with a notice that the command is more of a legacy command.

If you are serious about being prepared for the CCENT find a text that maps to the currently offered exam. A quick internet search will verify the exam number for which you should be looking. The exam is changed and re-numbered every so often so it's a good idea to double check.

Excellent! One of the best books on Spinal Manual Therapy I have come across. The new expanded chapter on the assessment and treatment of the pelvis and the other on the treatment strategies of the Lumbosacral Junction make this book well worth studying. Secrets of a Wedding Night~
By Lisa Wolff
This was a very engaging, delightful debut! Five years ago Lily and Devon fell in love and were determined to be together until Lily believed Devon left her and, in turn, Devon thought Lily left him for a wealthy earl and had led him on a merry chase. Now widowed and penniless, Lily sees an announcement for Devon and his newly betrothed wealthy heiress, Lily decides to pen a scandalous pamphlet that scares off Devon's fiancee. Knowing Lily is behind this act, Devon confronts her and tells her he will show her a true wedding night, as surely her husband failed. However, Lily is hiding a little secret and she is determined to resist Devon...or maybe she should seduce him? What follows is a sexy battle of wills that keeps getting wrenches thrown into it--a bet, Lily's sister, Devon's gambling and the refusal of either party to tell the truth of their current situations and their shared past.

Valerie Bowman is now on my auto-buy list with this debut and I am already anxious for the next two books which will feature her sister and then the man who becomes her dear friend (he is very proper and I can't wait to see him fall). The main reason I don't bump this up to a five star read is the fact Lily and Devon just can not talk to each other. It is always frustrating to me as a reader when the couple don't just clear the air and move on, yet I know for the story it needed to be held in for quite some time so its a hard balance. Lily is smart, protective, kind, loyal and has some spunk that flairs up after being called predictable. Devon is sexy (yum), confident, strong and stubborn and together they make a very sexy, fun couple. I did find it a bit odd that we did not see anything that was written in the pamphlet. Usually when a scandalous bit of gossip is written, we as the reader get to see some of that but it wasn't a big deal, just different :) So while parts of the story frustrated me just a tad, the writing and pacing was excellent. I loved all the characters and I am looking forward to catching up with them again. I loved the chemistry between Lily and Devon and Devon certainly delivers on his promise about showing Lily a proper wedding night! Overall, a splendid debut full of wit, emotion, heat and love. 4 1/2 stars

Simply delightful!
By K. Buckley
It's been many a year since I last read a historical fiction romance novel. I tend to drift in and out of genres and currently I am obsessed with British crime fiction. However, I love to discover new authors and the reviews and buzz about this book were sufficiently positive so I put down my Reginald Hill and picked up a Valerie Bowman. What a charming book! It definitely leaves me anticipating the sequel. The dialog is very witty, the characters are people you'd like to know; there was enough misunderstanding between the two main characters to cause tension but not so much as to be ridiculous and frustrating, as in some romance novels. Ms. Bowman set up the sequel well, giving the main character's younger sister enough dimension to make you want to know her story. And let's not be coy - the sex scenes were HOT. If I'd had a fan, I would have snapped it open and fluttered it. I am so excited about this new author and hope she has a long and prolific career.

A pleasing debut
By mary.t.
I am always on the lookout for new historical authors and was eager to read Ms Bowmans debut as the blurb sounded amazing. The actual book had all the ingredients, a handsome hero with lots of secrets and a beautiful heroine with lots of secrets etc etc. My only complaint was that somehow it all did not quite come together and the romance was not quite fleshed out..Oh yes lots of things were happening but maybe there were too many.. for example the explanation about the hero's son was sort of rushed., we never get to see or understand what was in the scandalous pamphlet clearly, the ending was dragged on a bit and the chemistry between H/h was lacking in some places. All this being said, it did hold my attention and I think the author has a lot of potential and I look forward to her next book.

This book addresses the lack of academic and practical research into corporate venturing by examining the role of this activity as both a form of large firm-small firm collaboration and as an alternative source of equity finance for small firms. These issues are explored through surveys of independent fund managers, coporate executives and technology-based firm directors.

From School Library Journal
K-Gr 2—In Carey's fractured fairy tale, Cinderella is mean and lazy. She goes to the grand ball as a mouse (punishment by her fairy godmother for bad manners), and it's her kindhearted stepsister, Gertie Ugly, who marries Prince Charming after they meet at the dance. Although the story omits many aspects of Disney's Cinderella, Blanco sneaks in a few familiar scenes in his digital illustrations. Children will also enjoy seeing how Blanco changes the appearances of the Big Bad Wolf, the Wicked Queen, and the evil witches: characters who try to teach Gertie how to act more like an "Ugly." It's easy to make this book interactive by asking questions about the character crossovers or by introducing children to additional versions of the stories, which in this case include the fairy tales "Hansel and Gretel," "Snow White," and "Little Red Riding Hood." VERDICT A decidedly different take on the familiar tale.—Tanya Boudreau, Cold Lake Public Library, AB, Canada

Review
This amusing fairy tale mashup reveals that one of Cinderella’s stepsisters, Gertie, was actually the kind, helpful one...Blanco’s digital illustrations set the story in what appears to be 1930s England while infusing Gertie’s quest with a gentle humor to match Carey’s narration.

Very similar to the original story of Cinderella
By BrittyMama
I am a huge fan of the retelling of classic fairy tales from another character's perspective so I was very excited to read this book. It looked to be a fun mashup of Cinderella and Little Red Riding Hood. Maybe Little Red was actually one of the step-sisters? Maybe the Fairy Godmother was actually bad and the step-sister was looking out for Cinderella the whole time? Unfortunately, I was a bit disappointed.

We are introduced to the third Ugly stepsister, Gertie, and find out that she isn't very ugly after all. In fact, she is portrayed very much like the Cinderella we all know (except Cinderella is mean here). Gertie is super sweet and pretty, does all the housework, is shunned by her family, and isn't allowed to go to the ball until at the last minute she is helped by the Fairy Godmother. Sound familiar? There were a couple of nice cameos from some other fairy tale favorites (Hansel and Gretel and Snow White) but for the most part, it was too similar to the original Cinderella story.

A Different Take on a Classic Story
By tvtv3
Most of us are familiar with some version of the story of Cinderella. However, the classic tale gets turned around and mixed up with some other fairy tales in CINDERELLA'S STEPSISTER AND THE BIG BAD WOLF. In this story, Cinderella is not very nice and she has not two, but three stepsisters. The other two everyone has heard of before, but the third stepsister is a girl named Gertie. Gertie is not like the rest of her Ugly family (their last name really is Ugly). She's sweet, nice, and kind. She wants desperately to go to the Prince's ball, but her mother won't let her unless she learns to be as wicked and mean as the rest of the family. So, Gertie is sent from one fairy tale villain to the next in an attempt to learn how to be mean. However, Gertie just can't seem to be mean and she seems to have no way to get to the ball. Help comes in an unexpected companion. CINDERELLA'S STEPSISTER AND THE BIG BAD WOLF has several cameos from other fairy tale characters. The story isn't as in-depth as other mashups and some readers might not like that. However, it's cute and has a certain charm and most children will probably enjoy reading it (or having it read to them).

From Publishers Weekly
From hairy hominids, rational, self-aware human beings sprang into existence within a mere two million years--an eye-blink in geological terms. McCrone believes it was language that triggered the quantum leap in human development, allowing Homo sapiens to arise in the midst of an inhospitable ice age and sweep across the earth. McCrone re-creates the way our Homo ancestors' use of language might have made possible an inner dialogue dependent on the controlled recall of memories--a skill essential to self-awareness. The British science writer's controversial conclusion is that "the human mind is only a few degrees different from an animal's." Imagination, higher emotions and complex habits of thought, in his theory, are language-driven extensions of the animal mind. Imparting a shock of discovery, this exciting evolutionary odyssey seamlessly interweaves recent advances in linguistics, brain research, cognitive psychology and anthropology. Illustrations. Enjoyable, lucid survey with misleading oversimplifications
By D. Cloyce Smith
Even 12 years after it was published, McCrone's first book remains a lucid introduction to the workings of the human brain, the history of its evolution, and the role of language in the development of self-consciousness and intelligence. He discusses how the brain evolved over millions of years, then he narrows his focus to examine how, during the last 40,000 years, language and self-awareness enhanced the brain's capabilities (through a process he calls "cultural evolution"). With its lack of jargon, "The Ape That Spoke" could be read by non-scientists interested in pursuing the far more exhaustive (and perhaps intimidating) studies by the likes of Steven Pinker or Antonio R. Damasio.
The reader should be aware, however, that McCrone's survey is occasionally reductive or misleading. Its most noticeable shortcoming, as the author himself admits on his own Web site, is that the book is "pretty sketchy on the neurological underpinnings of consciousness." (His later books attempt to address this disparity.) Second, readers must be very attentive to the endnotes in order to differentiate between scientific findings and McCrone's frequent speculation. Third, the book often presents tentative scientific conclusions as established fact and skirts the heated debates among scientists regarding language, consciousness, and intelligence. (His neglect of neurological studies only exacerbates this weakness.)
Finally, and perhaps most important, McCrone repeatedly uses the concept of "evolution" when he means "progress," "change," or "development." (Two examples selected from dozens: "Language gave early man just such a way to evolve and pass on complex ideas." "But now technology is starting to open the door to rapid mental evolution.") Even McCrone acknowledges that such oversimplification is not always useful when talking about something as complex as evolution, "where an effect can be its own cause and . . . where stable patterns emerge as what works outlasts what does not." Yet he nevertheless persists in using "evolution" in its metaphorical sense. Such vagueness may be appropriate for some topics, but it is certainly confusing in a book on evolution and language. In particular, as Stephen Jay Gould notes in "Full House," the term "cultural evolution" should be abandoned altogether, since societal transformation, unlike evolutionary change, can occur--and regress--both rapidly and deterministically (e.g., humans can easily and radically influence the direction of their culture and still remain human, but they cannot alter the genetic makeup they collectively inherited from evolutionary processes!).
Keeping in mind these caveats and shortcomings, diligent readers might still find McCrone's survey a useful introduction to more accurate and complex works on the topic.

This book makes anthropology more gripping than fiction
By bilge@transmeta.com
I picked up my copy of "The Ape That Spoke" in the overstock bins at my local bookstore, so who could have imagined that it would be one of the most engaging books I had ever picked up? Like the PBS series "Connections", the author weaves disparate threads of topics into an easily understood foundation for social fabric. "The Ape That Spoke" reveals current theories about why intelligence was a successful factor in human evolution. It relates the power of speech with self expression then with social interaction. The ability to formulate complex expression is then shown in the contexts of prehistoric man as well as modern life. The viability of these theories is backed by a description of the data from experimentation. This helps ground the theories so that it is easy to follow the conclusions made by the anthropologists whose work is represented by the book's author. I'd encourage the reading of this book for anyone with a curiosity about the workings of the mind, and further would suggest it as a required reading for a college philosophy course.

I read this book for a book review I had to do for my "Mind Brain and Behavior" class in college. It was a very simple book to read and understand. I dont neccessarily agree with all McCrone has to say, but he does do an excellent job at making his ideas clear to the reader. I also enjoyed the fact that he had stories, etc. to help the average reader understand it more.

The History of Human Rights: From Ancient Times to the Globalization Era, by Micheline R. Ishay

Micheline Ishay recounts the dramatic struggle for human rights across the ages in a book that brilliantly synthesizes historical and intellectual developments from the Mesopotamian Codes of Hammurabi to today's era of globalization. As she chronicles the clash of social movements, ideas, and armies that have played a part in this struggle, Ishay illustrates how the history of human rights has evolved from one era to the next through texts, cultural traditions, and creative expression. Writing with verve and extraordinary range, she develops a framework for understanding contemporary issues from the debate over globalization to the intervention in Kosovo to the climate for human rights after September 11, 2001. The only comprehensive history of human rights available, the book will be essential reading for anyone concerned with humankind's quest for justice and dignity.

Ishay structures her chapters around six core questions that have shaped human rights debate and scholarship: What are the origins of human rights? Why did the European vision of human rights triumph over those of other civilizations? Has socialism made a lasting contribution to the legacy of human rights? Are human rights universal or culturally bound? Must human rights be sacrificed to the demands of national security? Is globalization eroding or advancing human rights? As she explores these questions, Ishay also incorporates notable documents—writings, speeches, and political statements—from activists, writers, and thinkers throughout history.

From Booklist
From a legal viewpoint, human rights are comparatively recent history, but their essence--that a person possesses inviolable qualities by virtue of being a person--is as old as Adam and Eve. Ishay's treatment seeks to survey how those qualities have been defined, and it leans decidedly toward the theoretical, a caution to readers preferring inspirational stories. Ishay presents a spectrum of writers on human rights whom she links through time on themes such as the friction between individual and group rights, or the rights of man versus the prerogatives of the state, as the problem was put in the Enlightenment. It is one of six chronological periods into which the subject is organized, beginning with ancient religious commentary on rights. Following discussion of the Enlightenment's liberal legacy, Ishay develops socialist conceptions of group rights that arose from the Industrial Revolution and that also echo in contemporary concerns with globalization. For scholars of and activists in human rights, Ishay sympathetically furnishes historical contexts for specific causes and campaigns. Gilbert Taylor

Human Rights and Indigenous Peoples
By Peter N. Jones
Human rights are rights considered to be held by individuals simply because they are part of the human species. They are rights, in essence, shared equally by everyone regardless of sex, race, nationality, or ethnic background. They are universal in content. Despite this fairly straight forward definition, the recognition of human rights by individuals, groups, societies, states, and nations has been a constant battle across both space and time. Throughout the centuries groups or societies have failed to recognize certain human rights of individuals, groups, and cultures while at the same time recognizing those of others. Likewise, conflicting political traditions have elaborated different components of human rights or differed over which elements had priority. Today, the manifold meanings of human rights embodied in this definition reflects this process of history and change.

Presenting this long and conflicted history in one of the more accessible and comprehensive editions to date, The History of Human Rights by Micheline R. Ishay is the authoritative text on the subject. Using the main points developed in the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the book chronicles the clashes of ideas, social movements, and armies that comprise the history of human rights. This history, although largely told from a Western perspective does encompass the perspective of those who have struggled to obtain them. Framing the history of human rights development through six core arguments, The History of Human Rights offers not only a comprehensive history and analysis, but also the basis for a discussion of where human rights needs to progress. This last component is what gives this book particular importance for indigenous peoples. As lucidly covered through six in-depth chapters, one of the final battles in the history of human rights will be over the rights of cultures, and particularly the inherent rights of indigenous peoples and their cultural lifeways in relation to state, national, and international rights.

Beginning with the controversy of human rights and religion, Ishay argues that each great religion contains important humanistic elements which have contributed to our modern conceptions of rights. For example, in the West, the impact of Judeo-Christian morality and ethics has been central to the development of human rights. As Ishay notes Judeo-Christian morality was secularized, separated from politics, and strengthened in influence by the advent of capitalism and colonialism in Europe, largely at the expense of other notions of ethics. Because of the development of capitalism in Europe, Judeo-Christian ethics became secularized with the progress of the Reformation (16th century) and the democratic revolutions of the eighteenth century, finally being transformed into a liberal discourse that dominates our current conception of human rights.

This leads to Ishay's second major argument in The History of Human Rights: that our modern conception of rights, wherever in the world they may be currently voiced, are predominantly European in origin. Not only are they largely founded on a secularized version of Judeo-Christian ethics, but that their current definition largely originated out of this European beginning. As Ishay correctly argues, this does not imply that Western rights are reducible to contemporary free-market liberalism, but rather that the human rights vision currently depicted as liberal is in fact indelibly molded by the socialist ideals that grew out of nineteenth-century European industrialization and secularized Judeo-Christian ethics.

As Ishay clearly articulates, the two documents most responsible for modern legal formulations of human rights are the American Bill of Rights and the 1789 French Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen. Both of these documents were the result of various social movements in the pre-industrial era. When industrialization took over in Europe and America, becoming an all consuming process, these documents coupled with the previously secularized Judeo-Christian ethical thought became the guiding ideologies in human rights definitions.

As such, our modern liberal take on human rights is also indebted to the social thought of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries (Ishay's third argument). Current attempts at asserting universal human rights, as The History of Human Rights argues, are defensive mechanisms against either liberal or socialist ideologies, since these ideologies presumably represent the oppressive legacy of Western imperial and colonial domination of the world.

The fourth argument in The History of Human Rights builds on the previous three, as the progress of human rights moved from individual to social, and finally cultural in scope. As such, Ishay contends that cultural rights must always be informed by, and checked against, a universalist perspective of human rights.

Like religious rights, the notion of cultural rights, so strongly advocated by liberal nationalists in nineteenth-century Europe (and later championed during the twentieth-century post-colonial struggle) was largely rejected by socialists because it caused a disjunction between group solidarity and universal human rights (p. 131). Challenging liberal ambiguities, many socialists pointed out that the primary beneficiaries of cultural rights were more often particular groups or individuals within the culture, and not the culture as a cohesive whole.

If we cannot trace the history and development of human rights in a linear fashion of progression from the individual to the social to the cultural, how can we say there has been any progress made in their development? This is Ishay's fifth argument: has there been any progress through history towards a universal set of human rights. Her contention is that there has been, although not necessarily through the recognized mechanisms. This in spite of President Roosevelt's 1945 proclamation that the United Nations would "spell the end of the system of unilateral action, ... the balances of power, and all the expedients that have been tried for centuries - and have always failed" (Roosevelt 1950: 570).

In short, universal human rights are always potentially endangered by particularist and vague conceptions of rights framed in terms of the "national interest," "national security," the right to "individual self-determination," or "cultural rights." Therefore, we must constantly keep vigilance on those who are in power and those who define human rights and their scope. This last point leads to The History of Human Rights' final point; a question rather then an argument.

Is globalization a boon or a threat from a human rights perspective. This is an especially important question when looking at the human rights progress in terms of indigenous peoples. As Ishay argues, and I would agree, the answer is that globalization has the potential to be a boon for human rights, but that we are not there yet. With the development of global information technology, Human Rights Peacenet, Indigenous Peoples Issues and Resources, Amnesty International, and a multitude of other websites human rights advocates now have unprecedented possibilities for fighting. One cannot overlook the success of the human rights community's "infopressure" on the Mexican government during the Chiapas rebellion or the human rights "infoactivity" during the turbulent events in Tiananmen Square or against Indonesia's repression in East Timor.

However, we have not reached a nadir, we are still fighting an uphill battle. Not only has globalization opened new networks and avenues, but it has also allowed unprecedented human rights violations to occur. The illegal war in Iraq, China's occupation of Tibet, and the taking of land and natural resources from indigenous peoples are just a few. Human rights are still not universal. The best way to fight for their universal application is to know their history. The History of Human Rights is the best place to start. By knowing where we have come from, and how we got here, we can positively move forward. The History of Human Rights should be on everyone's reading list.

Make a difference. Know the history. Change the future.

European History?

Although much of the book provides a good background for much of Western history though the goggles of Human Rights, it at time seems to skip and distort aspects of it. How did benevolent religions sanction large scale war? Robespierre was not a champion of human rights by killing 20,000 people. Why are human rights still so in danger today? Don't get me wrong though, if you are looking for a historical read and do not have a lot of knowledge about European History, pick this up.

Human rights history is great, and badly needed.
By Francesco Lovecchio
Highly recommended to everybody. The book is an attempt to provide an account of the evolution of human rights over time and through political and philosophical thought. The author is well versed in political science and shows it off in this book while surfing in a very wide literature. It is well written. Two drawbacks in this beautiful book: not enough history of human rights; a scarce attention to those movements which paved the way to future developments but were unsuccessfull at first. Great piece of work anyway! Look forward for Vol. II.
