The book investigates the phenomenon of ‘manly homosexuality’, little treated in both masculinity and gay studies on Japan, arguing that desires and individual narratives were constructed within (and not necessarily outside of) the dominant narratives of the nation, manliness and Japanese culture. Overall, this book offers a wide-ranging appraisal of homosexuality and manliness in postwar Japan, that provokes insights into conceptions of Japanese masculinity in general.

Provides A Peek Deep Inside China -

State engagement in health government governance is a relatively recent development in rapidly modernizing China - the government's first health-care moves post-Mao were to withdraw from the sector, acerbating problems of cost, access, and equality; average life expectancy rose by only five years between 1981 and 2009, compared to an increase of almost 33 years during the Mao era (1949-1980). To be fair, its initial improvements (35 to 67.9) came from a much lower base, yet other nations have improved more from a similar base in recent years.

Infant/maternal mortality has made considerable strides recently. Infant mortality in China decreased from 38 deaths/1,000 live births in 1990 to 16 in 2010, and the mortality rate for children under five dropped from 48 per 1,000 live births to 18. The maternal mortality ratio has also fallen, from 110 per 100,000 live births in 1990 to 38 in 2008.

Another substantial improvement - TB cases in 2010 China were estimated at 216 per 100,000, down 45% from 2000.

Chronic non-communicable diseases such as cancer and cardiovascular are the leading causes of death in China - with pollution contributing to at least the cancer death rates. Public opinion surveys in 2009 ranked health care and food and drug safety as among the nation's top three concerns. A major contributor was the introduction of market-oriented reform w/o adequate rule of law.

Industrial pollution is not the only instance of conflict between economic and health goals. China has one-third of the world's smokers and suffers about one million related deaths/year; its cardiovascular disease death exceeds that in the U.S.

Author Huang suggests separating public hospital ownership from management and ceasing the use of drug sales as the main revenue source for hospitals, similar to Taiwan. (Of every $100 spent on U.S. health care, $10-$12 goes for drugs, in China it is $40-$45.) He also suggests replacing fee-for-service with DRG and capitation to give those hospitals incentive to hold down costs and improve accountability. As for food and drug safety, Huang sees weak enforcement as the greatest problem, sometimes based on 'political consideration' (corruption), especially at the local level. This problem is acerbated by the absence of press freedom.

The 'good news' is the incoming president Xi Jinping has pledge to bring higher levels of health care to China's people - Beijing plans to triple its health care spending to $1 trillion by 2020.

Bottom-Line: China spent less than 5% of GDP on health care in 2005, vs. 16% in the U.S. and 10% in Canada. However, China's advantage in purchasing power parity leads author Huang and others to probably overstate the crisis in China's health-care as far as financial commitment is concerned; this is especially likely given that the author's estimates of government spending have been labeled as far too low (Tang, Baris). It also has initiated a program of encouraging Western hospitals to invest in China. A third major initiative - expanding health insurance to universal levels by 2020 (now reportedly at over 94%, though at low benefit levels that focus on in-patient care).

About the Author
David Streiner attended the City College of New York, and then did his graduate work in clinical psychology at Syracuse University. In 1968, he joined the newly-formed Department of Psychiatry at McMaster University, and became the Chief Psychologist at the McMaster University Medical Centre. In 1980, he also became a member of the Department of Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics at McMaster, and was the Deputy Chair of CE&B for two years. He was one of the founding editors of Evidence-based Mental Health, and is currently editor of the Statistical Developments and Applications section of the Journal of Personality Assessment, as well as being on the editorial board of numerous other journals. Geoff Norman attended the University of Manitoba as an undergraduate, graduating with an honours degree in physics in 1965. He did graduate work in nuclear physics, obtaining a PhD in 1970. At that point he began a career in health sciences education, and subsequently obtained an M.A. in educational psychology from Michigan State University in 1977. He joined the faculty at McMaster in 1977, and has remained at McMaster for the next three decades. He has won numerous awards in medical education, including the Hubbard Award of the National Board of Medical Examiners (US), and lifetime achievement awards from the Medical Council of Canada and the American Educational Research Association, among others. In 2001, he was awarded a Canada Research Chair. In 2007, he was elected to the Royal Society of Canada. He has published over 200 papers in education, epidemiology, psychiatry and physics, as well as authoring and editing several books.

very nice book, excellent practical advice

I really like this book and wish that I'd found out about it before my psychometrics class in the spring started, because I would have assigned it in a heartbeat. It's got a lot of the kind of practical advice that anyone thinking of creating a scale REALLY needs to hear first, including the #1 bit of advice: Should you make one yourself? For instance, excellent summaries of the work on scale usage biases by Jon Krosnick, Norbert Schwartz, etc., give useful cautionary information for scale constructors. I have a few disagreements---some of the advice about procedures such as some of the scaling methods they mention is out of date, for instance, and the chapters on factor analysis and IRT are a bit weak, but I can cover that with other material. It certainly doesn't detract from the value of the book overall and I've learned a bunch I didn't know reading it. It'll be on the syllabus next time!

This is undoubtedly, one of the best books I have read in this area. The authors follow an appropriate sequence in terms of addressing scale development, testing and analyses issues. The best thing about the book is that it is really easy to comprehend and covers all the important areas. I feel it is a "must buy" for professionals in the area of health-related quality of life and outcomes research.

The book is extremely well written by people that know their field. For people interested in psychometry it gives a new perspective applying psychometrics in the health sciences. I found many applications and suggestions that were very useful.

Fantastic Introductory text

I was introduced to symbolic dynamics through a preliminary study of chaotic dynamical systems, and to satisfy my interest in the subject, took an independent study course on what I lovingly refer to as "Symba" as an undergraduate, using this textbook. Doug Lind and Brian Marcus have done a fantastic job at introducing and motivating the subject, and have placed some very well thought-out exercises after each section. The text gradually advances to some heavier material, so it's fit for undergraduates and graduate students who have a good grasp of abstract algebra (and maybe some graph theory). Though some of the examples are a bit outdated now (e.g. the section dealing with the Road Coloring Problem which has been solved), they remain quite illustrative and interesting.

Dense but well-written

It is late March as I write this. I have been reading the book since mid-January and have made it to page 77. This is in spite of the fact that I put in about 10 hours a week on it. The bulk of the time is spent learning the language for new concepts. I am pleased with the book in that it does an excellent job of foreshadowing those concepts in the wonderful examples and in the exercises.
I would give the advice to do as many of the exercises as possible while continuing to read ahead. If you do this, you will be prepare for what is to come, but you will be less likely to get bogged down.
I began this book because I wanted to understand entropy. It looks as if I will be well-prepared for that when I get to the topic in a few more weeks. It is only about 20 or so more pages away.

Well, this seems to be the only textbook on the topic of Symbolic Dynamics, but I think it fails as an "introduction". The initial chapter provides very little motivation for the use of Symbolic Dynamics, how it differs or improves on other fields such as Coding Theory and Dynamic Systems, and what kind of problems it would be most suitable for. Frankly, about 20 pages into the book I couldn't even remember why I was reading it.
For better or worse (worse, in my case) the book is written in the style of traditional graduate math books... Definition, Proposition, Definition, Proposition, Definition, Proposition... with very little intervening discussion. Simple, simple concepts are presented in dense, dense notation. Some people appreciate this, I'm sure. Not me.
In summary, I believe this book is written for smarter people than engineering sorts like myself, but as the only text in the area I think a more inclusive approach would have been appropriate.
