Fuji X-T10 Owners - Get This Book!

I purchased this book for myself and one for my son. We both have recently purchased a Fuji X-T10 and this book has been a great source of information for us. We appreciate the author's personal tips and recommendations. As with all cameras, the manuals that come with them leave much to be desired. As there are just a few guides for this camera available we highly recommend it.

Much better information than you will get from the x-t10 user manual

This book give a lot more information than the user manual and many suggestions that I found very helpful. Better explanations of many menu items and exactly what they do will let me make better choices, leading to better control of the camera and better use of this camera as a photography tool. I was pleasantly surprised with the amount of new information it contains.

It should come with the camera

It really complements the owner's manual. This book won't take you on the basics of the camera but offers a lot of advanced information that I have found very useful to really get the most of the camera.
Having spend good money for the camera the least you can do is to throw in just a few more dollars to take a fuller advantage of the camera. It would be a shame to always use the camera on the standard settings when getting more professional results is just as easy (but requires knowing how).
The author style is quite simple to understand with very clear explanations.

In this volume, William Baumgarth and Richard Regan of Fordham University offer the reader selections from Aquinas's Summa Theologica (summary treatise on theology), which is comprised of Part I, dealing with God, creatures, and human nature; Part I-II, dealing with the human end, human acts, virtue, and law; Part II-II, dealing with specific moral virtues and human acts; and Part III, dealing with Christ's redemptive sacrifice (never completed). The portions of the Summa selected for the present volume revolve around the questions of law and morality and thus come mainly from Parts I-II and II-II of the Summa. The individual chapters of the present work treat the following topics: conscience, law, justice, property, war and killing, obedience and rebellion, tolerance and church-state relations, and practical wisdom and statecraft. Some of these questions are drawn not only from the Summa, but from Aquinas's Commentary on the Sentences of Peter Lombard as well. The following is a review of some of Aquinas's questions treated in the present volume:

1. Law (Summa I-II)
A law is a promulgated ordinance of right reason for the common good that is created by the person who is charged with the care of the community. A good law has the effect of making men's behavior good. There are four kinds: (i) the eternal law; (ii) the divine law; (iii) the natural law; and (iv) the human law.
The eternal law is the eternal and unchanging Will of God. Although we cannot see it, we can perceive its effects through the rational orderliness of the universe. The eternal law is reflected in the divine law, which can only be known through God's revelation in the old law of the Old Testament and in the new law of the New Testament. The divine law is necessary to "give direction to human life" (p. 21).
The natural law is the participation in the divine law that man knows by virtue of his rational nature. All men have this law written on their hearts--to pursue good and to shun evil--which is the same for all people: "the natural law regarding general first principles is the same for all persons both as to the principles' rectitude and as to the knowledge of them" (p. 47).
As already mentioned, the human law is created by the governor who has care over the community and is promulgated. It should not aim to prohibit all vices and promote all virtues. A human law derived from the eternal law is a just law. However, the human law should not seek to "punish or prohibit all evil deeds," for by doing so it would inevitably "thereby also take away many goods" (p. 21).

2. Justice (Summa II-II)
Aquinas defines justice as "the constant and perpetual will to render to others what is due to them" (p. 105). Because it makes human acts and human beings good by correctly directing their actions, justice is a virtue. It does not inhere in the "irascible and concupiscible powers" (p. 111), but rather, in the power of the will of its subject. Furthermore, justice is the most important moral virtue because it "inheres in the more excellent part of the soul" (the will) and because "justice is in one respect the good of others" (p. 122). As Aristotle has written, "The greatest virtues are necessarily those that are the most worthy in the eyes of others, since virtue is beneficent power. People most honor the brave and the just because courage benefits others in time of war, and justice benefits others both in war and in peace" (p. 122).

3. Property (Summa II-II)
It is natural and lawful for people to possess, acquire, and dispense of material things, but with respect to their use, they "should not possess external goods as their own but as common possessions, namely, in such a way that they readily share the goods when others are in need" (p. 133). Although theft is a sin, it is lawful to take another's property "if the necessity is so pressing and clear that one has an immediate need of things at hand" (p. 140). When a certain degree of material possessions is necessary, acquiring more than the proper amount is a sin, and is related to covetousness, which Aquinas defines as "the immoderate desire to possess" (p. 159).

4. Obedience and Rebellion (Summa II-II)
Regarding the question as to whether Christians are to obey secular authority, Aquinas concludes that they are obliged to do so, as the Apostle Peter affirms: "For the sake of God, be subject to every human creature, whether to kings as to supreme rulers or to governors as the rulers' deputies" (1Pe 2:13-4). Christians should even do so when the promulgated law is unreasonable. However, when the law is unjust, the Christian is not obligated to obey it. Civil disobedience may be the proper course of action, unless disobedience would cause "scandal or danger" (p. 185). Scandal or danger may result if the disobedience of a law would cause a disturbance to one's fellow citizens or would cause a misunderstanding leading others to sin. Under such circumstances, it is preferable to obey rather than to disobey an unjust law.
Aquinas does not, however, allow for this exception when the temporal law contradicts God's divine law. In this situation, Christians are always obligated to obey God's law and disregard the temporal law. "Therefore," writes Aquinas, "if the emperor should command one thing, and God another, you should obey God and disobey the emperor" (p. 183).

Another great story in the Texas Rebels series. The thread of strength and responsibility continues to weave through the Texas Rebels saga. Each son with his own story touches your heart yet keeps you breathless as the story unwinds and slowly you are feeling the same conflicts within each of these sons. The books are hard to put down until you know how the these conflicts are resolved and how each Rebel's heart is fulfilled with its true love.

This was a good book in the series, I enjoyed it and will be buying the next one in the series, it's good that she is keeping the other characters from the past books and including all of them. I will be waiting for the next one in August.

Grease Marks

Book is in ok condition. Only reason I say this is because it came in the package with some sort of food stuck to the bottom of it, as well as grease marks that were left from said food source. Some of the grease even leaked between the pages and has wrinkled the bottoms of it. Not all that pleased.

About the Author
Donald G. Tannenbaum teaches Political Philosophy at Gettysburg College. He is the Founding Editor of COMMONWEALTH: A JOURNAL OF POLITICAL SCIENCE, has written widely for scholarly books, journals, and symposia, served as consultant to the Jacob K. Javits Fellowship Program Review Board of the United States Department of Education and to a number of Political Science departments, and been President of the Northeastern Political Science Association (1993-1994) and the Pennsylvania Political Science Association (1988-1990). Professor Tannenbaum received his Ph.D. in Politics from New York University, which named him a University Honors Scholar. In 2002, he was honored with an American Political Science Association/Pi Sigma Alpha citation recognizing him as a recipient of a campus-wide teaching award, which he attributes, in part, to his use of this text in several of his classes. In 2011, he was named chair of the Hubert H. Humphrey Award Committee by the Council of the American Political Science Association.

Thomas Mann at his tragic best!

For those of you who have not done so already, I would highly recommend reading Marlowe's "Doctor Faustus" and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's "Faust" before taking this one on. It will make more sense that way and will also provide a remarkable opportunity to see the evolution of a wonderful myth. Now, to attempt to summarize a masterpiece like this in a few words is absurd, but I will do my best. Marlowe's Faust is the most straightforward of the three (not that it is not a great work of literature itself, mind you). Faust is an absolutely brilliant character who is so brilliant, in fact, that he is bored with life. So he makes a deal with Mephistopheles (one of Satan's demons) that he will have 25 years of almost omnipotence, being able to do anything and possessing almost god-like powers. However, when the 25 years are up, his soul will belong to the devil. Goethe's Faust is one of the top 5 or so greatest exemplars of literature ever written. It is, quite simply, astounding. In short, the plot is kinda/sorta the same, only in Goethe there is no time limit in the agreement with Mephistopheles. Rather, at the point when Faust ceases to press on and becomes sedentary, the devil has him. It is the moment in which Faust utters "Stay, moment, stay....thou art so fair" that he will be doomed. I do not want to say anything more about Goethe's Faust so that I can refrain from giving anything away. At any rate, enter Thomas Mann with a 20th century twist on the myth. Adrian Leverkuhn sells his soul to the devil for a new form of music. Satan grants his wish and gives him Schoenberg's 12 tone. (Of course, it is Leverkuhn's 12 tone in the novel). For Mann, this was symbolically a representative of how 20th century man sells his soul to the devil; it is thru the trivialization of art. The 12 tone, although a brilliant conception, is none-the-less something other than music for Mann (and for myself, if I may add). Mirrored to Leverkuhn's fate is the seduction of the German people by Adolf Hitler. Hitler promised them great glories and a feeling of invincibility. For a brief time (like in a Faustian pact) he delivered on his promise. However, in the end, the Germans paid dearly for their hubris. The end of the war brought along with it the destruction of Her Dresden China; Dresden, the very cultural and artistic heart and soul of Germany, was all but destroyed. This book is truly an epic and is not for leisure or light reading. However, it is a must for anyone interested in the Faustian myth, World War II, German history, Thomas Mann or any combination thereof. A tremendous novel.

A dream without a soul is a nightmare

I found "Dr. Faustus" the most challenging of all Mann's novels to read. It is dense with symbolism, history, philosophy and digressions into frank editorializing by the author, who interjects his voice into the story in a disconcerting way.

The philosophical ramblings of "The Magic Mountain" are similar--the Dionysian Weltanschaung of the Jesuit (Naphta) and The Voluptuary (Peeperkorn) versus the Apollonian (Settembrini) are used as metaphors for a debauched and dying Old Europe versus the New Europe to be reborn after the convulsions of World War I. And they are also symbolic of the failure of "pure reason" and politically correct Art to save a society with no soul, where human lives are scored on a worth-scale and have no intrinsic value as endowed by their Creator. In "Dr. Faustus", Mann revisits the German split personality (order versus bloody chaos) and makes it more intimate; he desperately wants to unearth what is it about the German Soul that gave us both World War I and then its offspring World War II and Hitler. Mann spends the rest of the book examining the German soul in the character of Adrian Leverkuehn and the forces influencing his life.

This is a brilliant book in that it takes the favorite Faust theme so loved by the Germans and re-tells it in a compelling fashion. Where the reader will have difficulty is that they will miss many of the character names that are sly jokes (if you are not a German speaker), and in following Mann's dense prose, followed by digressions into his own musings. And then you need to be somewhat familiar with European history and cultural icons.

Leverkuehn sells his soul to the Devil for the ability to compose the world's most perfect musical work. Here is the meeting of Apollo and Dionysus; the music is modeled on Schoenberg's astringent 12 tone scale of systematic composition based on his constructed rules of music; the Devil seeks Chaos and destruction of God's creation and Man's immortal soul. Leverkuehn gets his wish from the Devil; he creates his immortal music, but he loses the most human of abilities; that to love and be loved. As he tries to escape the deal he made, he is struck down and the objects of his love are similarly destroyed. The devices Mann employs --a stroke following a bout of venereal disease, are realistic and are incredibly clever; these things COULD happen to a man in real life, though we are reading a fable about selling one's soul to a Devil made into an actual character. One of Mann's very early short stories (The Wardrobe) employs this same duality in storytelling; a sick man takes a train ride. Does he arrive at his destination, does he stop at a hotel where he meets a mysterious woman in his wardrobe, or does he die in transit? What is reality and what is fable here?

On its own merits, "Dr. Faustus" is not Mann's best book but it is perhaps his most personal. The author is telling a story to the willing reader as if he were almost reading it aloud, and taking asides to discourse on his deepest feelings as an exile from his homeland. If you are a Thomas Mann fan, it's worth reading after "Magic Mountain" prepares you for Mann's characteristic style and themes.

Nearly flawless

There are certain myths that seem to center a culture, stories that define and create a nation's heritage. The Great Gatsby defines the central american mythos. The Brothers Karamazov centers the Russian canon; and without a doubt the Fausus legend is at the heart of Germany's entire history, both political and cultural. Thomas Mann's retelling of the Faust legend for the twentieth century rarely misses a beat in its probing inquiry into the nature of Aesthetics, Sexuality, and Politics. And while the central questions on the role of power in relation to morality and the limits of artistic freedom that are the center of the Faust legend are here, Mann also manages to bring originality and his literary gifts to this retelling. What is remarkable about this narrative is that it tells you as much about the narrator as our Fausus himself. The narrator, Dr. Serenus Zeitblom, is just as central to this tale. His relation to our Faustian composer provides much of the dramatic tension as well as a human element in the esoteric wars over the nature of artistic power. Mann is among the greatest novelists of our century, and this is an unflinching novel that strives for meaning while within the echo of the Nazi guns that are the testament to the power of Faust and the darkness that the human soul must resist.

Cliffhanger. Don't bother.

Give me the whole book and I'll rate according to the writer's skill rather than being duped by cliffhangers.

Labled as 1st book in series, actually first 1/3 of a book.

I liked it until I got to the end and found out the book is not self contained. It is a gimmick to get you to buy the other two books in the series. This turned me off and I feel cheated since I thought I was buying an entire book. Seems a bit unethical and therefore I will not buy the last two books in the series.
